Eucharistic Fast
The Church considers fasting a means of spiritual preparation for the Eucharist and a way of showing reverence for the sacrament.
a) The time for the keeping of the Eucharistic fast is limited to one hour before the actual reception of Holy Communion. This applies to solid food, to alcoholic drink and to non-alcoholic drink, and is to be observed both by priests who celebrate Mass and by the faithful, no matter at what time of day Mass is celebrated or Holy Communion received. The fast is not broken by drinking water of taking medicine.
b) Those who are advanced in age or suffer from any infirmity, as well as those who take care of them, can receive Holy Communion even if they have taken something during the previous hour. (see Canon 919)
